It’s been a year of celebration at Freycinet Experience Walk with their beautiful Friendly Beaches Lodge accommodation turning 25 years old.

Designed by owner and guided walking pioneer, Joan Masterman in conjunction with Ken Latona (who also designed Bay of Fires Lodge and the Cradle Mountain Huts), this lodge is a tribute to timeless design and environmentally sound architecture. The purpose built lodge provides a beautiful home for walkers with a focus on comfort, environment, fine art and relaxation. It is located on a 130 hectare site in a private location with beach access.

On this occasion, Mrs Masterman said, “Friendly Beaches is a magical place. I am incredibly fortunate to have been the owner-operator of the Freycinet Experience Walk for 25 years. The dedication of the Tasmanian guides has ensured the Walk’s ongoing success. ”

The anniversary of the lodge also coincides with the centenary of Freycinet National Park, created in 1916 along with Mt Field as Tasmania’s first national parks. It’s been a big year celebrating this combined 125th anniversary!

Australian Walking Holidays are excited to launch their first ‘Women Only’ walk on the Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort in response to the growing number of women seeking active adventure experiences in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.

World Expeditions and Australian Walking Holidays CEO, Sue Badyari said, “There is something special about sharing your adventures with like-minded women.”

“The shared experience away from family and work pressures can allow you to take some time for yourself, push personal boundaries and make some great lifelong friendships along the way. And there’s certainly a great element of camaraderie and team spirit that exists in an all women group. A mix of ladies coming together from different parts of the globe to embark on a great adventure is very attractive.”

Ms Badyari said the number of women participating in active adventure tours has increased significantly in the past 20 years – growing from around 38% in 1996 to 54% in 2016.

“Working in the adventure travel industry, we know that women traveler’s aspirations to engage with trekking, cycling and even climbing mountains can be as robust as their male counterparts,” Ms Badyari said. “And nowadays, even on the most challenging adventure tours, such as trekking or mountaineering in remote mountain regions, women now make up around 30% of the tour group.”

The Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort is fully guided and supported wherever possible by a female local guide. The six day walk takes in the ethereal scenery of vast flood plains and razorback rocky outcrops, walking the high ridgelines of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Ideal for the more ambitious walker, the Larapinta Trail also has some challenging stages, passing over remote ridges and canyons, walking up to 72km over the six days.

The walk is enhanced by comfortable semi-permanent campsites, safari-style luxury tents, delectable Australian cuisine and wines, and star studded night skies.
