How Fit Do I Need to Be for a Multi-Day Walk?

     Category: Guides

Lord Howe Island lagoon with Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird rising above turquoise waters and lush green hills

The short answer

If you can comfortably walk for a few hours at a relaxed pace, you’re ready for many of our journeys. You don’t need hiking experience or extensive athletic training, because all our accredited, award-winning walks are graded so you always know what to expect. On some walks, you carry only a day pack with the essentials. On others, our teams move your luggage between accommodation for you, or on a few trips, you carry a light backpack with your own supplies for a few days. Either way, your meals and a proper bed await you each evening.

That’s the difference between a Great Walk of Australia and a standard backpacking trek through the outback or mountains. In short, ours are inclusive, expertly guided, small-group experiences, built around comfortable walking days and genuinely restorative nights.

What “fitness” means on a graded walk

Walking days typically run 4 to 6 hours across varied, natural terrain, with rest stops and a relaxed lunch along the way. Each of our 15 journeys is graded, so you can match your own fitness level to the right trail rather than guessing. For example, some walks call for being comfortable with:

  • Walking at a steady pace across natural terrain, including some hills
  • Carrying a light daypack rather than a full pack
  • Walking again the next day, and the day after that

Expert guides, small groups

Every journey is led by experienced local guides – experts who know the terrain, the wildlife, and the stories behind each landscape. Because groups stay small, nobody rushes your pace, and support is always close by. Over the days, guides and guests build a kind of trust that’s hard to find on a solo trek. Solo travellers are always welcome too, and private group departures are available if you’d rather walk with your own crew.

All-inclusive, so you can just walk

We handle the logistics before you arrive. Every itinerary already includes transfers to and from the trailhead, accommodation, all meals, drinks, snacks, national park fees, and even a piece of fruit for out on the trail. Some walks also include alcoholic beverages – check with your specific walk of choice. Thanks to unique, quality lodgings, from wilderness camps to boutique retreats, you recover properly overnight instead of pitching a tent or sleeping on the ground. As a result, a multi-day walk feels achievable rather than exhausting, whatever your starting fitness level. Each walk also provides a packing list, so packing is easy and you can simply show up and walk, stress-free.

Wellness, and time in nature

Guests consistently tell us the physical side is only half the experience. Days on the trail bring a low-impact workout for the body. However, the real shift is mental: a deeper connection with the landscape, better conversations with fellow walkers, and evenings of fireside or starlit comfort. Together, these hearty meals and unhurried evenings make the whole trip feel personalised rather than packaged. For corporate and private groups, walking together has also proven itself as a genuine leadership tool, building stronger teams through shared effort and time away from screens. Whatever brings you out on the track, the combination of scenic trails and unhurried pace supports both physical and mental wellbeing in a way few holidays can match.

Sustainability and local engagement, done properly

Great Walks of Australia ensures all walk members are eco-certified operators. That accreditation shapes everything: group sizes, waste practices on the trail, and how we work with the traditional custodians of the land we walk through. On journeys like the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk, that engagement runs deep. Built in collaboration with Aṉangu Traditional Owners, this walk offers direct engagement so you hear the stories and learn about the art, culture, land and its meaning, rather than from a guidebook. Choosing a small-group tour over independent travel also means a lighter footprint on the trails, tracks and parks we love. It also means a more direct, respectful relationship , and revenue flow, with the communities and conservation programs tied to each region.

What our guests say

Fitness levels and trail grades only tell part of the story – hearing from people who’ve actually walked with us tells the rest.

Cradle Mountain Signature Walk

“Bliss… If you want to experience the Overland Track and feel like a rock star then get on the Cradle Mountain Signature Walk. Light packs, great accommodation, fantastic food, Professional with a capital P guides, and a wilderness like none before. Easily one of the top 10 walks on the planet!”

— John, Sunshine Coast, TripAdvisor

Seven Peaks Walk

“Best vacation of my life… Lord Howe is like a secret undiscovered paradise. I almost hesitate to review it so the secret doesn’t get out. Amazing beaches, fantastic snorkelling, and some tough hiking for those who want to earn the amazing food at Pinetrees… We did not miss our phones or wifi at all! Can’t say enough about this place!”

— Amy, Idaho, USA, TripAdvisor

Flinders Island Walking Adventure In Comfort

“The six day Flinders Island walk was amazing! Great guides who looked after us so well, delicious food and spectacular scenery! I would highly recommend this trip!”

— Elizabeth Houston, Five Stars, Google

Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa Signature Walk

“This journey started in 2015 when I walked with Traditional Owners for 150 kilometres from the South Australian border to touch Uluṟu seven days later. It was one of my life’s great experiences, and it made me want to seek permission to sensitively share this cultural phenomenon with anyone prepared to tackle the desert and immerse themselves in AṉAngu history.”

— Brett Godfrey, Co-Owner, Tasmanian Walking Company

The Arkaba Walk

“The walk draws on the amazing nature of the Flinders and Wilpena – a rolling series of changing landscapes from gums to paper bark to cypress to open grasslands to rockeries of grass trees…. It’s good for the soul and the legs…great food and outstanding guiding, culminating in a night at the old homestead… truly a Great Walk of Australia. Boots on and do it!”

— Syzn, Sydney, TripAdvisor

These accounts echo what the readiness checklist below predicts: guests without hiking backgrounds, first-timers, and seasoned walkers alike all point to the same things – manageable daily distances, guides and transfers that take the logistics off their hands, and an experience that feels personal rather than packaged.

Readiness checklist

  • Can you walk 2–3 hours at a relaxed, steady pace?
  • Are you comfortable on natural terrain with some hills?
  • Can you picture doing that again the next morning? And perhaps the day after that?
  • Do you enjoy extended time outdoors?

If that sounds like you, you’re ready. And if you’re not sure, our guest experience teams can help match your fitness and interests to the right walk.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be?

A comfortable, everyday fitness level is enough for our easier walks – the ability to walk a few hours at a relaxed pace on varied terrain. For our more active walks, we encourage training with a few walks per week and a longer walk on the weekend. Back to back walks help ensure the legs are trail ready.

Do I need to carry my own gear?

Each day you carry your day pack with the basics like sunscreen, a layer of clothing, and your snacks and lunch. For our point-to-point walks (moving between accommodation) some walk operators provide luggage porterage, or in some cases you carry a light pack with your overnight gear. Clear packing lists are provided so you know well ahead of time what and how much to bring.

Is transport included?

Yes. Transfers to and from the trail, plus accommodation, all meals, drinks (some walks include alcoholic beverages and some are an extra cost), snacks, and national park fees, are all built into the itinerary.

Can solo travellers or beginners join?

Yes. Many guests walk solo or are completing their first multi-day trek. Small groups and expert guides make both easy.

Which walk suits a first-timer?

The Maria Island Walk and Murray River Walk are great starter walks, well-graded starting points for newer walkers. First-time guests also love the Flinders Island Walking Adventure in Comfort, with optional extra challenges for those who want to stretch themselves. With a good general fitness, first-time walkers also look at walks like the Bay of Fires Signature Walk, the Twelve Apostles Signature Walk or The Arkaba Walk. Walkers usually surprise themselves once they’ve done some pre-training – the tip is to walk your boots in and get some back-to-back day training done beforehand.

What do past guests say about the experience?

Guest reviews consistently highlight three things: guides who go above and beyond, food and accommodation well above typical trekking standards, and a sense of achievement that doesn’t require elite fitness – see the testimonials above for examples across several of our journeys.
