Been dreaming of walking Australia’s Larapinta Trail? Well Great Walks of Australia’s own World Expeditions now offers this iconic long distance hike staying at two newly opened campsites, nestled in the dunes of Australia’s dessert heart.
Stylish and comfortable dining and living areas have been specially designed to keep occupants comfortable in a climate known for its temperature extremes on the iconic Larapinta Trail, in the West Macdonnell Ranges, near Alice Springs.
World Expeditions’ long standing relationships with the indigenous traditional owners and NT National Parks & Wildlife have provided the basis for negotiation of an exclusive sub-lease, a cooperative arrangement that will benefit all parties.
The investment by the company in the upgrade fulfils the dual needs of providing a welcome refuge for trekkers after a day spent on the Larapinta Trail as well as using state of the art design and technology to protect this remote and beautiful land.
The semi-permanent structures are also designed to allow the land to recover during the off-season, maintaining the idyllic natural setting of these wilderness sites.
Building materials, colours and the overall style of the new structures were carefully chosen to blend in with the surrounding environment aesthetically and to provide a level of comfort not previously available in these conditions.
The Y-shaped structures will function as a living area, covering an area of some 150 square metres. Raised platform flooring combined with infinitely adaptable stretch canopy allow the structure to be modified to the conditions at the time, ensuring the interior will remain comparatively cool and sheltered in virtually any weather conditions. Café style gas burners will provide heating at night, along with the open fire traditionally lit outdoors at the campsites.
According to World Expeditions General Manager Domestic, Chris Buykx, the new structures provide for maximum amenity with minimal impact on the land.
“The new structures are attractive, practical and comfortable and we believe set a new benchmark with group trekking,” Chris said.
“Combined with the new composting toilets and hot water showers, we are confident our accommodation is second to none on the Trail.”
World Expeditions pioneered trekking on the Larapinta Trail, which was named in 2012 as one of only 7 “Great Walks of Australia”.
